Mental Health Counselling Program

About the Program

Mental Health Counsellors at the Norfolk Family Health Team are able to see patients with a wide range of problems related to their mental, emotional, and social wellness. They see individuals (age 10+), couples and families in a safe, confidential and supportive environment. Our program offers short term counselling (up to 8 sessions per year) and group programs.

All of our Registered Social Workers/Psychotherapists are generalist practitioners. The Counselling program focuses mainly on the following:
  • Mild to moderate anxiety
  • Mild to moderate depression
  • Grief/loss
  • Transitional life events
  • Parenting/family pressures
  • Relationship issues/separation/divorce
  • Communication concerns
  • Family of origin
  • Sleep issues
  • Stress
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Pain Management
  • Sex related issues
Who can use the service?

Mental Health Counselling at the Norfolk Family Health Team is open to all patients who have a family physician at the NFHT. If you have extended health benefits that cover counselling (eg. through your workplace or EAP- Employee Assistance Program) you will be asked to utilize that first.

How do I get a referral?

Support is initiated by referral through your doctor or nurse practitioner at the NFHT. You will be asked to complete a Mental Health Questionnaire during the referral process. Following this, a Registered Social Worker/Psychotherapist will reach out to you directly to understand your needs and determine if our service is most appropriate or if an external referral should be made.

We are not a crisis service.

Norfolk Family Health Team counsellors do not provide 24 hour crisis service. In the event of a crisis please contact CAST (Crisis Assessment and Support Team) at 1-866-487-2278, attend your local Emergency Department, or call 911.
