Sexual Health Program

The Sexual Health Clinic offers services related to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), birth control, vaccination, and cervical cancer screening. Anyone can access these services. You do not need to be a patient at the Norfolk Family Health Team or reside in Norfolk County to access services. Services are offered at our Simcoe location or may be available virtually through phone visits if appropriate. 

We support people of all gender identities and sexual orientations.

Birth Control:

  • Birth control counselling and all forms of birth control are available (pill, patch, vaginal ring, injection, implants, IUD, emergency contraception).
  • Nexplanon implant insertions and removals.
  • Intrauterine contraception (IUD) insertions are completed by our Midwifery team.  Referrals to gynecology can be made if sedation is requested for IUD insertion.
  • Lower cost birth control and free condoms are available.
  • Referrals for vasectomy and to gynecology to discuss permanent contraception.

Sexually Transmitted Infections:

  • Testing for infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomonas, syphilis, hepatitis, HIV, herpes simplex virus (HSV).
  • Testing could include urine testing, swabs of cervix/vagina/rectum/throat/genital lesions and providing requisitions for blood work.
  • Free treatment for public health reportable infections or prescriptions can be sent to any pharmacy.
  • Genital lumps, bumps and sores assessed and treated (ex. genital warts, molluscum contagiosum, and HSV).  Liquid nitrogen and topical treatments are available.
  • Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) to help reduce the risk of acquiring an HIV infection.
  • Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) such as “Doxy PEP” can be prescribed for those at higher risk of acquiring a bacterial STI.
  • Referral to specialists for HIV care.

 

Other Genital Infections:

  • Assessment and treatment yeast infections, bacterial vaginal, urinary tract infections, skin infections on the penis (ex. Candida balanitis).

Cervical Cancer Screening:

  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing
  • PAP testing
  • Management of positive results – referrals to gynecology or repeat testing according to Ontario Cervical Cancer Screening guidelines.

Immunizations:

  • HPV and Hepatitis B vaccines. If not publicly funded, prescriptions can be faxed to any pharmacy.  We can also apply for free HPV vaccine through the pharmaceutical compassionate care program.
  • Other publicly funded vaccines are available. Vaccines are also available through Public Health immunization clinics.

Pregnancy:

  • Pregnancy testing and options counselling
  • Prenatal and postnatal care is available through our Midwifery program.
  • Abortion using medications or referral for procedural abortion

Student Placement Requirements:

*Some of these services are also available through your academic institution, walk-in clinics and area pharmacies.

  • Immune status blood work, vaccine record review and immunization.
  • Prescriptions for vaccines not publicly funded.
  • Chest x-rays for positive a TB skin test, and Public Health reporting.
  • Completion of school forms
  • Tuberculosis (TB) skin testing

Tuberculosis Immigration Medical Surveillance (TB IMS):

  • Assistance with TB assessments, chest x-rays, and referrals as required by Public Health.

What we don’t do:

  • Point-of-Care testing for HIV/STIs or anonymous testing. Non-nominal testing is available.
